Traders affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaipu (traders' federation) staged a protest in the city on Tuesday opposing the provisions of the food safety act.

In a release, the organisation says that the quality of agriculture produce, due to various factors, is likely to vary and may not meet the standards the government has fixed. Blaming the traders and charging them for the variation in quality under the provisions of the food safety is not acceptable, the association has said.

It is impossible to grade the produce. The provision of the act mandating 14 documents from grocers to get licence is impractical.
