Members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) burnt portraits of Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

The protest was organised in protest against the Hindu Mahasabha’s plans to install statues and portraits of Godse on temple premises across India.

Slogans raised

Demonstrators led by TPDK State general secretary K. Ramakrishnan raised slogans condemning religious bodies that tried to create unrest among the people, on religious grounds.

Fifty-seven persons – including 11 women – who took part in the protest were removed by the police.
