Toddy movement plans agitation on May 14

April 17, 2010 03:32 pm | Updated 03:32 pm IST - Coimbatore:

Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement has announced that it will stage a black flag agitation in front of the Secretariat on May 14 demanding lifting of ban on toddy tapping.

Field Co-ordinator of Toddy Movement S. Nallasamy told reporters that the government announced the formation of a committee led by retired Judge Justice Sivasubramanian.

Committee

Even after eight months of the formation, there was no word yet from the committee on the findings or the government decision.

The government should take expeditious steps to get the committee report and revoke the ban on toddy tapping.

Demonstration

Toddy was a natural beverage and non-alcoholic.

In the event of the government failing to lift the ban, the movement members would stage a black flag demonstration in front of the Secretariate on May 14.

Similarly, the toddy movement announced that it would tap toddy and sell the same at the venue of the World Classical Tamil Conference in June.

In the event of the government trying to prevent the same, the Central Government should initiate action against the State Government for acting against the constitutional provision.
