Tobacco products worth Rs. 20 lakh seized in Coimbatore

The Sales Tax department received a tip off that a lorry loaded with tobacco products was parked on Variety Hall Road

Officials from the Sales Tax department seized a lorry containing tobacco products worth Rs.20 lakh from Variety Hall Road on Monday night.

The Sales Tax department received a tip off that a lorry loaded with tobacco products was parked on Variety Hall Road based on which the officials went to the spot around 10.30 p.m. and found that the driver and cleaner were not around. They found about more than two tonnes of tobacco products stocked in the lorry.

The officials seized the lorry that had come from Chennai. Investigations are on to find out the consignor, consignee and the lorry owner.

Truck knocks off railway gate

Traffic on Avarampalayam Road was disrupted for more than an hour on Tuesday after a truck knocked off the railway gate at the Avarampalayam level crossing.

According to the police, the truck tried to cross the gate even as the gate keeper was bringing it down for a train to pass through the level crossing.

The lorry was intercepted and a fine was imposed on the driver by the railways for the damages caused to the gate, the police said.
