A compact disc on irrigation water calculator was launched recently at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

Developed by S. Raman, Water Management Expert and Programme Consultant, International Water Management Institute – Tata Water Policy Programme, the CD can be used to calculate water requirement for different crops under different conditions.

It consists of a software that will provide the exact water requirement for crops, based on the data fed by the farmers.

Speaking during the launch, Vice-Chancellor of the university P. Murugesa Boopathi, pointed out that the CD would help mitigate the problem of water scarcity by enabling farmers apply the exact quantity of water.

They could asses the requirement of water by crops, based on location, crop geometry, stages of crop growth, and drip irrigation system operating time depending on lateral spacing, dripper spacing and dripper discharge rate and different soil types.
