Police deployment was stepped up in Big Bazaar Street and other areas where there is a high concentration of jewellery shops on Tuesday on the occasion of Akshaya Trithiya, considered an auspicious day for buying gold.

Police officials said that at least 400 additional police personnel were mobilised and posted in areas where a large number of commercial outlets were located. Personnel in civil clothes kept a tab and were equipped with a dossier of ex-convicts and habitual offenders.

The Crime and Law and Order wings were combined in several police stations in the city limits including Bazaar Police Station, RS Puram Police Station, Kattur Police Station and Rathinapuri Police Station. Further, officials said that around 100 Home Guards were also deployed on the occasion.
