Three ‘unsung heroes’ honoured

For their involvement in various social welfare initiatives

Three ‘unsung heroes’ were honoured with awards at the Chamber Day celebrations of the Coimbatore Chapter of The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Saturday.

The awards were given by the former Chairmen of the Chamber of Commerce in the presence of executive committee members at a function held on the premises of Hindustan College.

Those honoured were: V.S. Suresh Kumar, Managing Trustee of World People Welfare Trust, CEO of Vidya Sarawathy Academy and literary chairman of Rotary Coimbatore Green City, for conducting 365 seminars on social issues in government schools; R. Manikandan, Chief Coordinator of Kovai Kulangal Padhukaappu Amaippu, a crusader for the mission to revive and rejuvenate water bodies in Noyyal River basin, and M. Tasleema Nasreen, a transgender, who took the initiative of giving lessons in cooking to 50 transgenders and making them economically independent. She was the first transgender in the nation to get nominated as Swachh Bharat Ambassador by the Coimbatore Corporation.

On the occasion, Kulial Govindasamy demonstrated on “how to bathe with one mug of water” to create awareness on water conservation.

Kana Chitsabesan, managing director of Goodwill Housing and Investments Limited, Chennai, spoke on “Poruppu Yaar Kaiyil”. The Chamber President Vanitha Mohan and S. Natarajan, Honorary Secretary, took part.
