In a tragic road accident, two sisters and a driver were killed when the car rammed a chemical-laden tanker lorry on the Neelambur bypass road on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, Radhamani (36), wife of a realtor Palanisamy of SITRA area, and her sister Venmathi (34) wife of Shanmugasundarma of Nehru Nagar at Kalapatti were returning home after visiting a relative. The car was driven by Prakash (28) of Kalapatti.
It was learnt that when the car was on the bypass road, one of the tyres burst resulting in the driver losing control over the vehicle. The car rammed on an oncoming chemical tanker from Mumbai proceeding towards Kerala. Two of the victims died on the spot, while one died on the way to the hospital.
The accident resulted in chemical spilling on to the road, posing a potential threat of an impending major accident The police and public dumped sand on the spilled chemical to prevent fire accident. Fire and Rescue Department officials also cordoned off the area and nullified the chemical effect. This resulted in a brief disruption of traffic on the busy bypass road. Police investigations are on. Relatives of the deceased who were away on a foreign tour are rushing back to Coimbatore on hearing the accident news.
