Three-day cattle expo begins

The fourth edition of the three-day ‘Kongu Naatu Kalnadai Thiruvizha KNKT- 2018’ began with much fanfare at Samathur, near Pollachi, on Friday.

The programme organised by the Vanavarayar Foundation, began with Go Puja for 108 Kangeyam cattle in the evening. To mark the beginning of the event, flag was hoisted in the morning and an agriculture exhibition was inaugurated.

The event has been organised for the fourth consecutive year in a row to protect, preserve and portray – folk art, heritage, culture and history of the land.

The purpose of the event was to impart cultural awareness, scientific knowledge and social exposure to the people.

The second day being a weekend, it was expected that the Thiruvizha would attract more crowds. Various breeds of cattle, horses, goats, camel and roosters would be on display. Colourful and variety breeds from Kangayam and other varieties of cattle with native breeds would be displayed. Beauty contests would take place on Saturday for Kangayam breeds.

It was expected that over 1,500 cattle will take part in the event, the organisers said. The event also had cattle/horse/ram show and exhibition of agricultural, dairy, and farming products.

On Sunday, the event will have on display Best Vandikalai, Kangeyam Bull, Indigenous Breed, Ram, Buffalo, Aseel, Native Breeds – Dog Show, Best Equine etc. Besides this, traditional folk art forms will also take place. The event is supported by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, Fisheries and the Tamil Nadu University for Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
