Corporation administration has been warning city residents of stringent action, including disconnection of water supply, if they construct any building without proper rain water harvest (RWH) structure.
But many of the RWH structures constructed in corporation schools, run by the same administration, do not comply with the guidelines announced by the corporation. At Corporation Middle School at Perichipalayam in the city, the ‘RWH’ structure is just a pit of few inches deep dug on earth with a sign board erected to tell the visitors about the existence of such a unit, who, otherwise, might find it difficult to understand what it is.
“This is the same case in most of the corporation schools. In the name of constructing RWH structures, large amounts have been spent but without any actual structure put in place,” said Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener S. Sundarapandian.
Many of these faulty structures are now filled with water providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. When contacted, Councillor (Ward 51) A. Shanmughasundaram told that there was a lapse in the way the RWH structure was constructed at the school.
He blamed the corporation officials for not following the guidelines in letter and spirit.
“I will immediately take steps to correct the anomaly as the defective structure is making the water remain stagnant,” he said.
The AAP has now sent a petition to the Chief Minister's office asking for an inquiry into the alleged corruption in the construction of the rain water harvesting structures in corporation schools.
