To expedite the implementation of the long-talked about multi-level car parking project, the Coimbatore Corporation has floated tenders.

Sources said the tender the civic body had floated on Monday would be open till September. Once the tender period ends, the corporation with the State Government’s suggestion will select the right bidder and take up the project so that it could be completed by 2019.

The project is to build three multi-level parking lots in Gandhipuram (Cross Cut Road), Town Hall (B.B. Street) and R.S. Puram (D.B. Road) at ₹42 crore so as to ease traffic congestion by providing more road space.

The three facilities would have shopping space as well so that the builder could use that to generate revenue and also share a portion of it with the Corporation. The builder-contractor would operate the parking area for 30 years. The entire operation would be mechanised, requiring minimum human intervention.

The sources said two of the levels would be reserved for two-wheelers and others for four wheelers.

The corporation had proposed the multi-level parking facilities in 2010 and had been working on various models before it arrived at the current one with scope for revenue generation. Based on the Corporation’s inputs, the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation had prepared the a project report.
