A team comprising representatives from the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), JSW Foundation and TERRE Policy Centre visited Ward 23 (a part of R.S. Puram) on Saturdayto study the civic body’s zero waste management project (‘Shunya’).

The team of five was here as the Corporation had applied for the Earth Care Award.

Avinash Madhale, programme coordinator, CEE, said that the Corporation had applied under the ‘urban environment issues’ category and had highlighted its Shunya project. It was a competition that was open for urban local bodies from SAARC countries.

Of the 100-odd applications received, the organisers had chosen only seven cities for field visit and Coimbatore was one. Panjim (Goa), Pune (Maharashtra) and Vellore (Tamil Nadu) were a few among the cities chosen for the field visit.

During the course of the visit, the team would study and also prepare a short film of four minutes to be screened to the jury members, who would then select the best city. The selection would be held in November this year.

The other categories that the organisers had instituted included innovation in reducing carbon footprint, industry and community led initiatives.
