The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Schools Headmasters and Post-Graduate Teachers Joint Action Council, the Nilgiris chapter, staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday.
Led by the organiser of the district unit, A. Raju, the demonstration was to focus attention on the demands of the council. The demonstrators wanted the anomalies in the Sixth Pay Commission to be set right and the government order relating to service conditions at the higher secondary level withdrawn. Arrears for 2006-2007 should be cleared without delay.
Seeking a separate directorate for higher secondary education, they said that the allowances for handling duties connected with the plus two public examination should be raised.
In private schools, which are getting government aid, headmasters should be selected on seniority basis and not on the basis of eligibility and ability.
In government aided higher secondary schools, the headmasters should be authorised to deal with applications for advances from provident fund and surrendering of earned leave.
