A woman was reportedly killed by a tiger at Ododuvayal near Gudalur along the Nilgiris-Kerala border on Saturday. According to the Deputy Director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) D.Chandran, the victim was identified as Mahalakshmi (34), a tea estate worker.
Stating that she had been attacked while she was at work in the tea garden, Mr. Chandran said that the area which fell under the Gudalur forest division was about a kilometre from the Nellakottai Range of the MTR. Since it was very close to Muthanga in Kerala where a man was killed and eaten by a tiger a few days ago, it is suspected that the carnivore which killed the woman was the same. He added that MTR would help the officials of the Gudalur forest division in dealing with the situation.
Police sources said that the tiger attack triggered tension in Pattavayal with the residents resorting to protests.
Forest sources said that cages are being moved to the affected area.
Meanwhile people here have started drawing a parallel to the situation which prevailed early in 2014 at Doddabetta, Kundahchappai and their surroundings near here.
