The sunshade of a building under construction at Mavuthampathi village, near Walayar, collapsed on Friday resulting in the death of two persons and causing severe injuries to two others. The building was supposed to be a tissue culture laboratory.
Around 10 workers from Kariapatti in Madurai district were working at the building at the time of collapse.
Construction was underway at the first floor where a sunshade was being erected. Three persons - M. Karthik, 25, S. Shanmugasundaram, 35 and S. Senthil Vel, 34, were working on the sunshade while S. Muthalagu, 35, was working directly beneath it.
According to the police, the sunshade collapsed around 11 a.m. and fell on Muthalagu who was crushed to death. Karthik suffered injuries in the head and also died on the spot.
Senthil Vel and Shanmugasundaram suffered injuries and have been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital
Construction engineer Karthikeyan was arrested and the building owner Sethu Madhavan from Kuniamuthur was questioned by the police.
The KG Chavadi Police have registered a case and invoked Section 304 (ii) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
