Officials from Salem Railway Division, representatives of the Coimbatore Railway Coordinators Association (CORACAS) and Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW) officials conducted a joint study at the Periyanaickenpalayam Railway Station, recently.
It was a prelude to the renovation work to be carried out there by the company as part of their corporate social responsibility.
CORACAS president T. Sampath Kumar said that it was initially resolved that the railway authorities will earmark the railway land so that the area could be fenced to carryout the renovation work.
“Our association and railway authorities will again conduct another round of inspection at the railway station in this connection on Friday,” he said.
Approval
He said that the works were proposed to be carried out after getting approval from the Salem Railway Division.
He said that it was resolved to demolish a couple of old buildings and replace it with new buildings.
However, the existing station building would be maintained as a heritage structure.
Another major proposal was to extend the platform on both sides to accommodate trains with even a coach composition of more than 20. “Passengers of a few compartments are now forced to jump from the bogies as the platform is not long enough,” he said. He added that shelters would also be provided on the platform.
Other infrastructure such as toilets for men and women, drinking water facility and chairs for the waiting passengers would also be sponsored by LMW.
As part of the beautification works, an arch would be constructed at the entrance of the station and a landscaping and park had been proposed on the station premises.
