The Coimbatore City police on Tuesday evening removed around 75 students, who, under the ‘Students’ Consortium Against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project’ banner staged a protest in Gandhipuram.
The protestors also condemned the police action in Kundankulam against the people protesting against the commissioning of the plant. The police said that they removed the protestors, who did not have permission.
The students, who were from various city colleges, also sought a halt to the commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.
The students said the governments must first address the issues raised by the protestors and only after putting to rest their apprehensions, should start operating the plant.
The protest and the efforts by the police to prevent the protestors from spilling over to the road resulted in commotion in the busy Gandhipuram junction and the police had to bring in reinforcements to bring the situation under control.
