Suggesting an innovative solution to reduce the dependence on fast depleting fossil fuels, A. Surya and Arun Vignesh, Plus One students of Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, presented their idea of using acetylene gas (formed when calcium carbide reacts with water) as cooking fuel.
The project won them first prize in senior category in the ‘Veettukku Oru Vignyani 2012’ inter-school science exhibition organised by Puthiya Thalaimurai Group at The Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, on Friday.
Inaugurating the event, K. Karunakaran, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, recalled the Scientific Policy Resolution (1958) passed by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to emphasise the role played by the Government in nurturing scientific temper and encouraging research in science and technology.
Director of Puthiya Thalaimurai Group R.B.U. Shyam Kumar, said that the event was aimed to provide an equal platform for children belonging to rural and urban areas to express their talent. Over 200 participants from schools across the district took part in the expo based on the theme ‘Reduce, Recycle, Repair and Reuse’ which was held under junior (Class VI-IX) and senior (X-XII) categories.
S. Balaji, class XI, P.S.G. Sarvajana High School, who emerged second in senior category, presented a creative solution to reduce automobile pollution with his project ‘Eco-Bike’. “The acidic substances in automobile emissions were neutralised using sodium hydroxide which significantly reduced the amount of pollutants,” he explained.
Raghunandan and R. Kumaresh, Plus One students from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, bagged the third prize in senior category.
S. Alagu Meena and M. Pradeep from Sri Nehru Vidyalaya bagged first prize in junior category. The programme was held to coincide with the 150 anniversary celebration of the School. A. Ebenezer Jeyakumar, Director (Academics), S.N.R. Sons Charitable Trust, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College and Honorary Secretary of Stanes School, also spoke. Correspondent of the School Mercy Oommen, Principal Lewellyn Xavier and Head Mistress Lata Ratnam, were present. The finale of the exhibition will be held in Chennai on August 22.
