Students from various engineering and polytechnic colleges got an opportunity to bring out the scientist in them at the ‘Kovai Scientist’ programme organised as part of the Coimbatore Vizha celebrations here on Tuesday.

The event, held on Rathinam Technical Campus, saw students from 30 colleges give shape to their innovative ideas in the form of models and project presentations.

From manufacturing to automobiles to robots, students had let their innovation run riot. There were robots to trace terrorists from their hiding places, automatic alarms to stop trains when the rails were damaged, manufacturing cement using fly ash and egg shell powder, and many more.

Earlier, inaugurating the contest, M.V. Loganathan, director, Sri Seethalakshmi Castings Private Limited, spoke on the enterprising nature of people of the State with reference to the frequent power cuts. In spite of this, people continued to put in hard work and bring out results. He urged students to continue to innovate and strive to apply the engineering concepts in every aspect of their work.

The team of K. Naveen Kumar and P. Vikraman from SNS College of Engineering won the first prize for their innovative project on smart card system using micro controller in the college category. The team of R. Naveen Krishna and R. Vignesh from Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic won the first prize for the project on smart card child detection system.
