The City Police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old college student on charges of duping a gold merchant to a tune of Rs. 5.5 lakh cash.
According to the complainant Srinivasan, who runs a gold smithy on Cross Cut Road, Mohammed Ishaq, a student residing in Kattoor, Mettupalayam, approached him promising to arrange gold at a cheaper rate compared to the market price. Following this, Srinivasan arranged Rs. 5.5 lakh to buy gold. The student, along with four others went to his house and asked him to show the money. When he gave them the briefcase, they stuffed the money in a bag and gave it back to him with a promise that they will come back with the gold. As the accused and his accomplices did not return, Srinivasan opened the bag to find only paper instead of cash.
Based on a complaint from Srinivasan, R.S. Puram Police launched a hunt and nabbed Mohammed Ishaq near the Coimbatore junction on Wednesday. He was remanded in judicial custody. Investigation is on.
Lawyer Rajavel faints at court Commotion prevailed at the District Sessions Court Complex on Wednesday, when lawyer Rajavel complained to the Judicial Magistrate that he fainted after consuming a tea offered by the police.
Lawyer Rajavel and his wife Mohana were arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Ammasi of Rathinapuri and faking the death to be that of Mohana in order to escape from a cheating case registered in Odisha. Rajavel is facing murder charges and his wife was facing charges of cheating.
Police also suspect the couple in the murder of realtor Manivel of Ramanathapuram. The two were brought to the Judicial Magistrate Court No VII with police escort on Wednesday. Rajavel complained to the Magistrate that he fainted after consuming the tea offered by the police and accused the police of mixing sedatives in it.
Mohana told the magistrate that there was a threat to her husband’s life at the hands of the police. Police responded saying that they offered tea only after Rajavel complained of giddiness and asked for tea.
Magistrate Hemant Kumar directed the police to refer lawyer E.T. Rajavel to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment and ordered that Mohana be produced before the court on January 22. Mohana was lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Three held for stealing laptops Pollachi Police on Wednesday arrested N. Rathinakumar (28), Balaraghupathi (19) and M. Ashok (19) on charges of stealing ten laptops that was kept at the Municipal High School for distribution. On January 5, ten laptops stocked at the school on Pollachi – Palakkad Road went missing. Laptops have been recovered from them and investigations are on.
