‘Strengthen traditional health practices'

The call for protecting and strengthening traditional health practices was given at a two-day seminar, organised recently at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam.

A release said the Centre for Traditional Medicine and Research conducted the seminar on ‘Traditional Healing Practices and Ethno Botanical Collection'. Swami Shakshatkarananda inaugurated the programme and explained the importance of traditions and their contribution to Indian society.

The traditional healing practices had been continuously nurturing the well-being of communities even in inaccessible areas.

Documentation

J. Thirunarayanan, Secretary, CTMR, said documentation of traditional knowledge was necessary for the revival of the ancient system.

He also spoke on Siddha system, the folklore associated with it and its importance in health care.

D. Narasimhan, an ethno botanist, explained the richness of the Indian tradition and the need to protect community-based intellectual property.

Sixty traditional ‘vaidhyas' from different areas of Tamil Nadu took part.
