More than 100 students of Sankara Institute of Management Science, Sankara Polytechnic College and Sankara College of Science and Commerce conducted an awareness programme on the use of helmet on Tuesday morning.
According to a release, the students conducted a street play to drive home the importance of using helmet. Dani Jacob, a first year management student, said that two students – one with helmet and one without helmet – enacted before the public the impact of meeting with accident with and without the safety gear.
It was very short play aimed at making the people understand the consequences of not using the safety gear.
The students’ decision to use helmet was after a debate they had among themselves. The students spoke about the increasing accidents involving two-wheeler riders, how many of the victims were students and what could be done to create awareness among the riders.
The students who debated the issue came to the understanding that most students who rode two-wheeler did not use helmets because they thought that it did not go with their style or that it was not fashionable to use the safety gear.
It was then that they decided to take out an awareness rally and also stage a street play.
The release said that with help of a sponsor, Sri Palaniappa Auto Parts, the college distributed 10 helmets to those riders who did not use one and sweets to those who rode with helmets.
