The Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday asked private hospitals, clinics and labs to stop indiscriminating dumping of biomedical waste. It has warned that those medical establishments found dumping the waste will invite legal action.

At a meeting held at the Corporation with the representatives of hospitals, clinics and labs, Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy said that the hospitals must necessarily segregate biomedical waste from other wastes and also ensure that the two wastes do not get mixed up.

The medical establishment should train their staff to ensure that the wastes were properly disposed of.

Likewise, the establishments should also evolve a way to safely dispose of their liquid waste. Mr. Velusamy said that medium and small establishments should also come out with a solution and that the Corporation was willing to cooperate in this regard.

Mr. Velusamy also said that the Corporation would conduct a zone-wise meeting in this regard. Deputy Commissioner S. Sivarasu asked hospitals not to charge patients/visitors for parking their vehicles within the hospital premises.

To avoid paying the fee, the visitors parked vehicles outside the hospital campus, which affected the cleaning operations, he reasoned.
