Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, Shubhranshu laid the foundation stone for the new building to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 75 lakh for the 153-year-old Periyanaickanpalayam railway station on Saturday. The station was established in 1873.

Mr. Shubhranshu said that the construction would be completed within eight months.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Shubhranshu said that there was no immediate move for doubling the Coimbatore North – Mettupalayam railway line. He said that due to safety reasons, there was no idea for the Salem Railway Division to operate special trains in the Nilgiris Mountain Railway section. However, he said that to cater to the increased demand by passengers, Salem Division has added one more unreserved coach to the NMR train, on trial basis. For construction of Thudiyalur Railway Station, the corporation has remitted its share to the railway administration and tenders have been called for the construction works.
