Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police have recovered 40 sovereigns of gold jewellery valued at Rs. 8 lakh from a man who had duped residents by masquerading as a Tangedco staff member on duty, who had come to check faulty power consumption meters in their houses.

On August 19, the police found Velusamy alias Balasubramanian (56) of Mettur in Salem district based on a tip-off.

Inquiries revealed that the accused, along with his wife, had duped retired scientist Radhakrishnan of Ganapathy Maanagar of gold jewellery.

He had also duped and robbed a retired bank employee at Sai Baba Colony.

He had resorted to such crimes in Gobichettipalayam, Tiruchengode and many other places.
