Steps taken to meet water needs

May 30, 2010 06:36 pm | Updated 06:36 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Corporation is taking up measures to overcome the scarcity of drinking water under the Pilloor scheme in the north and east Zones of the city.

“We have initiated a multi-pronged approach,” Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said on Friday. “The first step has already been announced: Siruvani supply will be made once in four days from June 1, instead of the present alternate day distribution,” he said.

Lorries to supply water were being allocated to 10 severely-hit wards in East Zone. The phone numbers of the drivers would be passed on to the people.

Besides, more lorries would be positioned at the overhead tank at Vilankurichi. These would rush water to scarcity-hit areas in the north and east zones.

Water stored in this tank was meant for supply only to the suburbs. But, the quantity required to offset shortage in the city would be made, the Commissioner said.

“We have requested the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to plug leaks in the Pilloor main line as this will help in preventing loss of a significant amount of water,” the Commissioner said.

There were reports of supply under the Bhavani Water Scheme for Kavundampalayam and Vadavalli taking off on June 5.
