Customers who went to the Postal Finance Mart at the Head Post Office on Variety Hall Road here on Wednesday morning had to wait for more than an hour for the transactions to start.

Many preferred to stay away from the counter because of unpleasant smell near the counter. An official at the post office told The Hindu that the stench had kept away customers from coming near the counter. It took some time to locate a dead rat near the electricity cables and then to remove it and the stench. However, business resumed shortly.

A warning signal to whosoever is our postl minsiter to see the fate of
post offices. Has he ever visited anay post office in the metros
burgeoning suburbs. They work in small space, chairs and tables
huddled and staff working in opitiable conditions. The postal bags
that have arrived in from other metros are stocked in the corridor and
in somepost offiecs in the verandah. And at the other end do you
rememebr when the psotal cover rate was fixed. The courier chaps are
laughing all the way to the bakks with rupees 70 for each letter
posted to outstation whil epost office contineus with the old speed
post rates. We are killing the post ofice and the postla minsiter is
blissfully unawaare of this perhaps. What atre the civil servants in
teh Postal Dept doing. Now that bandicoots dying in the opsotal
premises raising a stink causing a newspaper reprot, I hopre some
enterprising newmen will visit the psot offices in their region and
see the conditions in which post offies function.
