State-level spell bee contest held in Coimbatore

The State-level Regional Qualifiers of the Wiz National Spell Bee contest was held in the city on Sunday.

According to a press release, as many as 609 students from various schools participated. Students from Classes I to XII took part. They were divided into six categories. There were two rounds in the contest - written and oral.

All participants were provided with a ‘Word Bank’, a preparatory booklet brought out by a panel of eminent academicians and English teachers.

“I was very much astounded when I witnessed three students who got the spelling correctly for nearly 140 words without any mistake,” said Jose Sebastian, Regional Manager, South of Wiz National Spell Bee.

Results

The top 10 finalists in each category were given cash prizes, medals and certificates.

G. Kalamani, the regional coordinator of Wiz national Spell bee, Coimbatore, said that the results for the written examinations would be announced within a month.

The top 10 students in each category would represent Tamil Nadu in the national finals scheduled in Kolkata this year.

“Some of the students had exemplary spelling skills, proving that English is not on the brink in the current era of electronic mailing,” she added
