Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday held a meeting to review the progress of infrastructure-related works for the ensuing World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in June.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that floats depicting the rich culture and heritage of Tamil and its legacies would form part of a three-km rally to be taken out from VOC Park in the city.
Procession route
On the procession route, the Chief Minister, leaders and foreign delegates would witness the procession.
One side of Avanashi Road would be earmarked for the public to witness the procession. He wanted the police to identify the extent of the stretch for the purpose. Mr. Stalin also advised people to identify places along arterial roads where vehicles from other districts could be parked.
With Avanashi Road being the procession route, Mr. Stalin urged the officials to expedite the work of strengthening and widening the Tiruchi Road and also to complete the five roads that would serve as a link/scheme road between Avanashi Road and Tiruchi Road.
He also asked the Corporation Commissioner to expedite the work of construction of a bus stand on Mettuppalayam Road.
With regard to the condition of Mettuppalayam Road, Collector P. Umanath said that at least initially the stretch from Coimbatore to Narashimanaickenpalayam needed to be widened. Mr. Stalin advised the officials to prepare a proposal and outlay and take up the same with the National Highways Authority of India.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that he would request the Union Minister for Highways during the Chief Minister’s conference to be held in New Delhi on February 6 and 7 for according priority for improvements to Mettuppalayam Road.
Mr. Stalin also reviewed the availability of accommodation for the President, Chief Minister and foreign delegates during the conference days. Along with Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, he drove down on Avanashi Road and discussed the arrangements for the procession and offered suggestions.
