The Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Board (TNBB) on Friday conducted a workshop to create awareness among the stakeholders on the implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and the Access and Benefit Sharing Partnership project at the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy (TNFA).
The workshop dealt in detail on the key provisions of Biological Diversity Act, 2002, processes involved in establishing Biodiversity Management Committees and documentation of People’s Biodiversity Registers in Tamil Nadu.
Similar workshops are planned across the State, said S. Ramasubramanian, Conservator of Forests - Coimbatore Circle.
Around 40 officials from various government departments such as agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture, forests, fisheries and sericulture from the districts of Coimbatore, The Nilgiris and Tiruppur took part, besides representatives of some environmental organizations involved in biodiversity related works.
Collector T.N Hariharan inaugurated the workshop and Yogesh Dwivedi, Director, and S. Thirunavakarasu, Additional Director of TNFA, A. Udhayan, Secretary, TNBB spoke.
The Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Partnership project is part of technical co-operation between Government of India and Government for Germany.
Implementation of the project is supported by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in New Delhi, and the National Biodiversity Authority in Chennai, along with Germany’s Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) — an agency that works for sustainable economic, ecological, and social development. The project is implemented in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand.
