Marumalarchi Dravida Munetra Kazhagam cadre burnt Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha in effigy in the city on Wednesday, to condemn the red carpet welcome and high security that he was given at Tirupati by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Union Government.

Committee

The cadre, numbering about 70, said that the Sri Lankan President did not allow the three-member committee formed by the United Nations to probe the mass killing of Tamils in that country. The party’s district president R.R. Mohan Kumar said that the Bharatiya Janata Party will face defeat like the Congress, if the Union Government continues to support Mr. Rajapaksha.

The demonstrators were arrested and released later in the day. MDMK cadres also staged protests in rural Coimbatore.
