City police seized a large amount of spurious liquor and arrested four persons in R.K. Pudur in Irugur on Tuesday.
Ajith (27), Anish (27), Jio (21) and Shyam (21) all hailing from Kerala, were arrested. Three were graduates and one a school drop out.
Police found 17 cans each containing 35 litres of rectified spirit, 275 bottles of spurious liquor in bottles with labels of reputed brands, 52 bottles of arrack, thousands of bottle lids and a plastic drum.
The accused had a 1.22 country-made revolver.
Inquiries revealed that the gang used to obtain rectified spirit from Gujarat, prepare spurious liquor, pack it in bottles with labels of reputed brands and send the cargo to Kerala.
A total of 380 bottles had been sent recently to Aluva in Kerala and a second batch was being made ready.
Acting on a tip-off, City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu formed a special team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Prohibition Enforcement Wing) V. Rathinasabapathy to conduct the raid.
The Commissioner said police were keeping an eye on peripheral areas and would continue to take action against prohibition offenders.
