In a bid to step up enforcement of road rules, District Collector M. Karunagaran on Sunday handed over speed radar guns and breath analysers to Regional Transport Officers.
Mr. Karunagaran said that Transport Department officials too could book cases of speeding and drunken driving. The speed radar guns would give a print out of the details of the vehicle and the speed at which it was proceeding. Four speed radar guns have been procured at Rs. 18 lakhs and two breath analysers cost Rs. 1 lakh. Some of the RTOs were being provided with television sets to screen short films on creating awareness on road rules, road safety, and on offences, punishments for the same.
Deputy Transport Commissioner K.N. Uthayanun said that in a drive conducted against offences for two days, 2,260 vehicles were checked and check reports were issued to 296 vehicles for violations. A sum of Rs. 76,468 was realised by way of taxes, Rs. 3.58 lakhs as compounding fee for offences. Tax of Rs. 21,670 and compounding fee of Rs. 3 lakh have been proposed to be collected by respective registering authorities after adhering to the procedures.
