Traffic police police are conducting special drive to check vehicles plying without proper lighting at night. The police have registered around 350 cases cases on Wednesday and Thursday.

The police said that improper lighting and alternations done to the headlight will be checked during the special drive. The decision to check lighting of vehicles was decided at the traffic improvement meeting headed by Commissioner of Police A. Amalraj held on Wednesday. Improper lighting includes low lighting, light and heavy motor vehicles with single headlight, defunct indicators and parking lights.

Similarly, alternations in the lighting such as fitting additional lights, use of high power LED lights and decorative LED lights are also being checked.

“While low lighting can cause traffic accidents at night, artificial lighting may district other motorists. The headlight of each vehicle should be the one recommended for the particular model. It is observed that several people are replacing the original light with high power LED lights due to which vision of people driving in the opposite direction disturbed,” said S. Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

In the case of two-wheelers, the police are checking use of additional lights and decorative LED lights that are fitted on crash guards and rear end.

Offenders are imposed Rs 100 as fine under provisions of Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

Assistant commissioner of police (Traffic) K. Magudapathy, and traffic inspectors K.V. Sathasivem (West) and C. Ayyasamy (East) are coordinating the special drive.
