The District Administration will recommend issuing a direction seeking the departments concerned to inspect all public buildings, special buildings and high-rise buildings for compliance to fire safety norms, said M. Karunagaran, District Collector on Thursday.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Karunagaran said a report in connection with the fire that broke out at Vigneshwar Cresta at Lakshmi Mills Junction on Avanashi Road has been sent to the Government. The official machinery will take a serious view of the absence of fire safety systems and non-compliance to the building rule norms and violation of fire safety norms.

As a first, immediate steps would be taken to check all the public, special and high-rise buildings for compliance to fire safety norms. Legal action against the building owner for violations and negligence causing death of four and injuries to many will be taken care of by the police, he added.

Later during the day, Agriculture Minister S. Damodaran, Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Collector M. Karunagaran called on the injured at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and at the private hospital and enquired about their health condition. Solatium of Rs. 1 lakh each was given to the families of the deceased at their residence and Rs. 25,000 each was given to the two injured women being treated at a private hospital.
