Strengthening the solar fence around the Gudalur Municipal dump yard that borders the Municipality and Naduvattam Panchayat will be completed by the end of this week, District Collector P. Shankar told The Hindu after inspecting it on Wednesday.

One acre bordering Naduvattam was identified three months ago to dump the nearly 19 tonne garbage generated in the local body.

This posed a threat to wildlife, as elephants, and other animals started consuming plastic wastes.

The municipality then decided to fence the place at an estimate cost of Rs. 1 lakh.

It was completed on Wednesday.

The District Collector after inspecting the place suggested some improvement works at the yard.

“The dump yard has three layers of metal wires respectively at a height of 2, 4, and 6 ft high from the ground. This will prevent elephants from entering the yard. But this was not sufficient to keep away smaller animals like wild boars. The local body has been asked to strengthen the fence,” he said.

Gudalur Municipal officials on Thursday started bridging the gaps between the already erected three layers.

“The solar fence will have six layers by the end of this week,” Mr. Shankar said. He urged the officials to recycle the plastic waste, and use it for laying roads.

The Collector inspected the construction of multi-storied houses for sanitary workers of the local body, and tourism development activities at Gudalur too.
