S. Kausalya, wife of Dalit youth Shankar, at Udumalpet GH, just before she was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, on Thursday.

Caste Hindu girl S. Kausalya (20), whose Dalit husband Sankar (22) was a victim of honour killing, attempted suicide by consuming malachite powder, a chemical substitute for cow dung at her husband's house at Komaralingam, near Udumalpet in Tirupur district on Thursday. Doctors, however, said she is out of danger. Kausalya was taken to the local government hospital first and then to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The police are guarding the intensive care unit where the girl has been admitted.

V. Vigneswaran (19), younger brother of Shankar, told The Hindu that Kausalya, unable to bear the loss of Shankar, reportedly took cow dung powder in the early hours of the day.

According to police, she was disturbed ever since she visited the burial ground a few days ago, where Shankar was laid to rest in March. Judicial Magistrate Vidhya recorded her statement at the hospital and the Komaralingam police are inquiring.

Kausalya’s father-in-law Velusamy, a labourer, said he lost his wife three years ago to illness and his son was brutally murdered in March. “Kausalya’s act has worsened our mental agony,” he said.

Her suicide attempt comes two months after the gruesome attack on the couple in public at the Udumalpet bus stand.
