After the last date for withdrawal of nominations on Monday, a total of 13 persons remained in the fray for the 12 posts (six each to be selected from among elected representatives of urban and rural civic bodies) of members in the District Planning Committee to be constituted in Tirupur district.
District Revenue Officer R. Gajalakshmi told The Hindu that of 12 posts, six seats to be filled from among the district panchayat councillors (i.e. rural local body) got automatically selected unanimously as only six candidates were in the fray.
In the case of the remaining six seats (i.e. from among urban civic bodies), elections would be held later this month since seven candidates are in the fray.
“A total of 423 elected representatives of one Corporation, 5 municipalities and 17 town panchayats councils (all urban bodies) will be exercising their franchise to select the candidates to fill those six seats,” Mrs. Gajalakshmi said.
Official sources added that the District Planning Committee would be headed by District Panchayat chairman as its ex-officio chairman and District Collector as its ex-officio vice-chairman.
