Six persons, including three women, were injured when a speeding lorry ran into a bus stop and an eatery after hitting a van, at the Ondipudur bus stop on Trichy Road on Sunday.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that the lorry was moving at high speed down the Ondipudur overbridge and was heading towards Singanallur when the accident took place around 12.15 p.m.

The Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW), East, of the Coimbatore City Police registered a case and were investigating.

The police said that the lorry first rammed a mini goods van, which went out of control, and stopped after hitting a lamp post on the median.

“The lorry driver then turned to the extreme left of the road but could not stop the vehicle from ramming the bus stop and an eatery nearby, ” the police said.

The injured were identified as driver of the goods carrier J. Senthilnathan (43) and his wife S. Jayanthi (32), of Pallapalayam near Irugur, who were in the van’s cabin, S. Amsaveni (35) and her parents R. Murugan (60) and M. Kalamani (55) of the Appanayakanpatti Pudur area near Sulur who were waiting at the bus stop.

All the injured were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Kalamani suffered a head injury.

The police said that Thirumurugan, a college student who suffered a leg injury, was under treatment at a private hospital.

TIW Inspector R.
