Tense moments prevailed on the Corporation office premises here on Friday as Ward 41 Councillor S. P. A. Sait along with members of the public staged a sit-in protest to condemn the “apathy” of the Corporation administration when it came to addressing the grievances of the ward residents.
Mr. Sait alleged that many of the roads in the ward were unfit for transport as the Corporation officials had been frequently digging them up either under the pretext of laying storm water drains or for some other reason.
“The works on the Rs. 40 crore project conceptualised by the Corporation in the city, with loan support from Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW), a development bank based at Frankfurt in Germany, is going at snail's pace at Ward 41,” he said.
Another problem raised by the agitators was the inadequate drinking water supply across the Ward for the past many months. They said that potable water was supplied only once in 10 to 12 days.
Similarly, the requests to commission the sanitary complex built in the Ward two years ago were kept pending for “reasons known only to the Corporation officials”.
“The 18-seat toilet complex at Poolavari Sukumaran Nagar is now standing like a white elephant,” Mr Sait observed.
The agitators moved away only after some senior Corporation officials promised that their grievances would be addressed within a week.
Mr. Sait said that if the Corporation officials yet again failed to fulfil the promise within the stipulated time, the agitation would be intensified.
