To prevent roadkill on Dhimbam Ghat section, the forest department has installed signboards with speed limit restrictions on the stretch.
The Dindigul – Mysuru National Highway 948 passes through Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR)and the 14 km stretch from Bannari to Dhimbam with 27 hairpin bends and the stretch that passes through Hasanur to Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border are known for animal crossings.
Heavy vehicles, particularly lorries, use the stretch to reach Mysuru and other parts of Karnataka.
Maximum speed
Animals getting killed by speeding vehicles are common on the stretch. There were also incidents of animal attacks on humans who had parked their vehicles in the forest area in the past. Hence, to prevent human-animal conflict, the forest department has installed signboards on the stretch.
It instructs motorists to operate their vehicles at a maximum speed of 30 km, while they were also warned not to park their vehicles on the stretch. Sources said that leopards, elephants, tigers and other wild animals cross the highway at various places and road users were warned of maintaining the speed. Speed breakers and barricades have also been placed from Hasanur to the State border in Pulinjur to prevent speeding of vehicles.
