The owners/proprietors of tailoring units, affiliated to Tailoring Shop Proprietors Sangamam (TSPS), have appealed to the State government to immediately set up a skill development institute in Tirupur district to exclusively produce highly-skilled tailors.
This requisition by the entrepreneurs, made during a meeting of TSPS members held here on Thursday, has come in the wake of intense difficulties faced by them in getting properly trained tailors for their outlets.
“At the moment, we are facing almost 60 per cent shortage of tailors vis-à-vis the requisite strength needed to efficiently and profitably operate the 450-odd tailoring outlets functioning in Tirupur city and its immediate suburbs,” TSPS secretary U. Balakrishnan later told The Hindu .
According to him, the skill development institute should offer free courses in tailoring to attract youth into the profession.
The owners pointed out that with fashion periodically undergoing drastic changes, there would be always a high demand for highly skilled tailors. The meeting also took a decision to implement uniform stitching rate in all shops for respective types of products (ie shirts, trousers and nightwear) and to display the rate card in every outlet.
“The uniformity in levying the stitching charges from customers will correspondingly help the owners pay wages to the tailors on identical scales and thereby, avoid frequent migration of tailors from one shop to another,” the TSPS members pointed out. The tailoring unit owners expressed concern over the continuation of long hours of power cuts since majority of the machines used for stitching were now operated on power.
