People in Periya Semur have a public library with hundreds of books on a variety of subjects. But they are not able to utilise the library to the full extent as it lacks study space.

The library functions in a building with no space to put up chairs and tables for the benefit of readers. The building has space enough only to accommodate the books and for the librarian. The library users have to stand and read the newspapers, magazines and books.

“The space constraint is so acute that the new books cannot be accommodated in the library any more,” users point out.

The library enjoys a good patronage from the people in Periya Semur.

A good number of school and college students, women and office-goers utilise the library. A number of students preparing for competitive examinations visit the library often. If there is adequate study space, the library will receive a steady stream of visitors daily. Readers will be able to spend more time in the library, people point out. Avid readers in the area have already taken this issue to the notice of authorities at various levels.

Officials have given assurance on several occasions that they will look into the issue. But no fruitful efforts have been taken up so far, they complain. People have appealed to the authorities to take immediate steps to shift the library to a spacious building and equip it with more books and facilities.
