Nearly 500 shops in Madukkarai on the Palakkad Road and Madukkarai Market area remained closed on Tuesday in protest against the damage to the Adhi Veeramahaliamman idol in a temple in Kuniamuthur.

Various Hindu organisations staged a demonstration in the morning demanding that the culprits be arrested immediately. They objected to taking video of the demonstration by a member of a minority community. Tension prevailed when they tried to chase away the person.

In the afternoon, minority community members staged a demonstration in protest against this.
