Thanks to the heavy rain in the last 15 days in the catchments of the Parambikulam — Aliyar Project (PAP) reservoirs, storage in Sholayar reservoir exceeded its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 160 ft around 12.45 p.m. on Friday. Sholayar is the biggest and primary reservoir in the PAP scheme.
On Monday, the inflow into Sholayar continued to remain at 4070.60 cusecs and Parambikulam with a Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 72 feet had 12.72 ft. Now, the inflow is expected to fast fill up the Parambikulam reservoir.
Any improvement in PAP reservoirs will cheer the farming community as it is a major source of water for irrigation for a couple of taluks in Coimbatore and Tirupur district, officials said.
Storage in ft on Friday at 8.30 a.m. are as follows (FRL in brackets): Aliyar dam 71.40 (120), Thirumurthy had 4.27 as against 60 and Amaravathy 48.39 (90).
Rainfall in mm in the PAP areas till 8.30 a.m. on Friday is as follows: Sholayar 35, Parambikulam 11, Thoonakadavu 7, Peruvaripallam 9, Aliyar 1, Upper Nirar 35, Lower Nirar 23, Chincoa 29, Chinnakallar 35, Valparai PAP 15 and Valparai taluk office 18.
Total rainfall in the district in the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. was 96 mm and average rainfall is 8 mm.
Though the storage in Siruvani had not reached the brim, there had been a considerable improvement in the reservoir. Moderate showers in the catchments were fast improving the storage position. The other major drinking water provider — Pilloor — has already surplussed.
