Residents of R.K. Naidu Layout, off Thadagam Road, had a bad Sunday evening and Monday morning when they realised that the water the Coimbatore Corporation was contaminated with sewage.
The residents said that not many residents in apartments realised that the water was contaminated until their neighbours from houses told them so, for they had opened the valve to let the water fill the sumps.
And, when they opened the lid, they did realise what was in store for them.
Resident P. Radhakrishnan said that the apartment residents then lamented that their 10 — 15 days’ water had been spoilt and that they would have to look for alternative sources of water until the Corporation arrested the flow of sewage into the drinking water pipeline.
He said that the apartment residents were also forced to clean the sump to store fresh water as and when the civic body resumed supply.
Rajitha Menon, another resident, said that though at times the colour of the water was not too dark, it was the odour that was unbearable.
Efforts to reach Councillor (Ward 13) D. Umadevi failed.
Corporation engineers in charge of water supply said that a leak in the drinking water pipeline had led to the leak as the water pipeline was close to sewerage system.
Following complaints, a Corporation team repaired the pipeline by plugging the leak.
Supply The Corporation also flushed out the existing contaminated water, added chlorine and would soon supply clear water. Until then it would supply drinking water in lorries and this supply would begin on Tuesday.
The next supply through pipeline would be at the earliest.
