The First Additional District and Session Judge C. Padmanabhan on Tuesday sentenced G. Sivakumar (29), a native of Kumbakonam, to life imprisonment for murdering V. Chellathal (65) and to seven years rigorous imprisonment for attempting to kill Chellathal’s six-year-old grandson at Madathukulam.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
M. Sathyanarayan, the additional public prosecutor, said that the incident pertaining to the case occurred on October 15, 2011, when Sivakumar stabbed Chellathal to death with a knife and then cut the throat of her grandson with a blade in an attempt to kill him.
The boy escaped with injuries.
“Sivakumar, who was then working as a textile unit worker, committed the dual crime due to the grudge arisen after Chellathal’s daughter refused his marriage proposal.
“At that time, Chellathal’s daughter was living next door to Sivakumar at K.V. R. Nagar in the city and had a strained relationship with her husband.
“Seeing the situation, Sivakumar, who was also married, proposed to her,” Mr. Sathyanarayanan said.
The Madathukulam police investigated the case after charging the accused under Sections of 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code.
