Seemai karuvelam trees removed

Officials say that it will take three more months to complete the work

The district administration has said that seemai karuvelam (Prosopis juliflora) trees in 2,291.69 acres were removed and work is on to uproot the trees in the remaining 7,118.18 acres.

Collector M. Asia Mariam held a review meeting on the progress of removing trees in the district. Officials said that the trees were found in 1,328.23 acres in panchayat unions, of which trees in 462.40 acres were removed. Of the total trees spread in 1,409.11 acres in panchayats, trees in 619,26 acres were removed, of the total trees spread in 481.3 acres in public places, trees were removed in 81.69 acres. They added that trees were found in 717.40 acres in private land of which trees were removed in 86.88 acres.

Trees were found in 3,618 acres of water bodies that were maintained by the Public Works Department of which trees in 617.70 acres were removed. The trees were removed in 2,291.69 acres out of the total 9,409.86 acres, officials said. They said that it would take more than three months to complete the work.

C. Malathi, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, Namakkal Revenue Divisional Officer M. Rajasekaran and officials from various department participated.
