The Coimbatore District Rural Police have filed sedition charges against two activists of the Hindu Front who allegedly delivered speeches with the objective of fostering communal hatred.
According to police sources, Sivapugazh, President, Coimbatore district north, Hindu Front, and Manokaran, State speaker of the organisation had allegedly delivered inflammatory speeches during a public meeting organised near a bus stand at Karamadai around 7 p.m. on Wednesday (September 11) as part of the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.
Complaint
K. Mohammed Sheriff, 72, secretary of the Sunnath Val Jammat, filed a complaint with the Karamadai police alleging that these two activists had engaged in speeches with the objective of creating dispute between two religious communities.
Police officials investigating the case told The Hindu on Sunday that these two leaders had also spoken in a derogatory manner against the Government. Based on the complaint by Mohammed Sheriff, the Karamadai Police registered a case on Saturday invoking sections 153 (a)(1) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion by words), 153 (b)(1)(commits any act prejudicial to maintenance of harmony between different religious groups), 295 (a) (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 124 (a) (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police have launched a search for these two persons who are still absconding. The police suspect that they may have fled the district. Further investigations are on.
