Following a fire accident last year that killed four people at Vigneshwar Cresta, a commercial structure on Avinashi Road here, Coimbatore Corporation and the Local Planning Authority (LPA) sealed 59 unauthorised buildings in the city.
Just over a year after the accident, the seals have been removed for 11 buildings so far based on the assurance given by the building owners.
The buildings were sealed for not getting the required approvals or not providing the mandatory safety provisions or violating the norms.
According to an official source here, the Government takes the decision to remove the seal depending on the assurance given by each applicant.
There are some more applications pending with the Government and some more building owners are yet to approach the Government.
Of the 14 buildings sealed by the LPA, five have been opened so far and of the 45 sealed by the Corporation, six have been opened. The building owners have six months time to fulfil the assurances they have given the Government, the official said.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, says the purpose of removing the seal is to given an opportunity to the building owners to set right the violation or deviation or meet the mandatory norms.
The LPA should follow-up and ensure that the owners take the required measures and take action if they do not do so within six months.
